Against the Odds, a Second Chance

In a world with many challenges, a single act of compassion can make all the difference. Our Christmas campaign theme for 2024, “This Little Light”, invites everyone to become that spark of hope by living out compassion and love. As we reflect on the blessings of the year that has past and look towards the year to come, let us not forget those who still struggle in silence and who need our compassion to find their way out of darkness.
“At Sridonchai Municipality School, it is not possible for us to reject children who can’t access education only because of family poverty or the migrant status of their family.”

In a school of 530 children, 150 muslims, with 20 myanmse refugee kids. 70 are from very needy families where receiving 500 baht per term subsidy from the government is hardly enough for educational support.

Troubled Waters

Many of whom struggle with returning home to single parent families. With breakdowns in the family, primary school children return to an empty home, have dinners alone and see their father or mother at 11 pm before just before they fall asleep and go off to school at 6 am. Nok, a 11 year old who aspires to be an artist like his father, hopes to make enough money selling art in the market with his father. ‘ I want to learn English so I can reach more customers, colouring furiously.

For others like Myanmese boy Zeya, from a family of 6 the poverty is upper most in his mind. With 5 other siblings in his family, he wants to be a policeman to earn a stable income to help.
With the Pai river in their backyard, they know that life might not always flow in their direction but with loving support through an afterschool care programme from NGOs like Salvation Army, they hope to conquer odds.
